What is measles?
Measles is a contagious infection that can affect people of all ages. It is caused by a virus that spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, talks, or sneezes. It's one of the most contagious infections - if one person has it, up to 90% of nearby unvaccinated people may become infected. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine protects people from getting measles. The vaccine comes in the form of a shot. The risk of measles can increase in places if many people in the community have chosen to not get the vaccine, leading to an increase in measles cases in some parts of the United States.
